Great Broadway Shows to Get You Through the Winter

Winter in New York is dreary. It's cold, it's gray, the wind gets trapped between the buildings and slaps you in the face like a whip as you attempt to walk down the street. But there's a (literal) bright spot: the lights of Broadway. Without fail (except in the case of a severe snowstorm, but who can be bothered to leave their apartment then anyway), the shows run all year long, rain or shine, in heat or icy temps, eight shows a week. So go see a Broadway show this January or February! Here are some great ones that are guaranteed to cure those winter woes.

Anything Goes

In this classic musical, tap-dancing, blackmail, singing, disguises, and deception come together aboard the S.S. American as two unlikely couples find love while out at sea. The fabulous revival stars Tony Award winner Sutton Foster (Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Drowsy Chaperone) and Tony and Academy Award winner Joey Grey (Cabaret, Wicked).

Godspell

The beloved musical that tells the story of Jesus through rock, pop, and rap music (among other styles), pop culture references, and wacky costumes is back on Broadway and rocking out the Circle in the Square Theatre night after night. Hunter Parrish (Weeds, Spring Awakening) and Wallace Smith (Ragtime, Hair) star as Jesus and Judas, respectively.

Lysistrata Jones

It's a modern day retelling of Aristophanes' Lysistrata, and it's tons of fun. Set in a university where the basketball team is on a decades-long losing streak, the cheerleaders come up with a way to get the boys to start winning: withhold sex from them. The cast is made up of young, talented, relative newcomers who are sure to turn any frown upside down.

Mamma Mia!

What's better than the hits of ABBA meshed together to create a crazy story about a girl who invites the three guys her mother slept with around the time she was conceived to her wedding on a Greek island? Nothing, in my opinion. Mamma Mia! has been at the Winter Garden Theatre for over a decade now, and for good reason. It's awesome.

Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

Based on the hit Australian film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, this jukebox musical features the dance hits of Madonna, Donna Summer, and many, many others, all while telling a really great story: three drag queens travel across Australia in a flashy RV on their way to a gig in Sydney. It will make you cheer, dance, laugh, and yes, even cry.

Happy January, everyone!
