The Notebook...The Musical?

Bestselling author Nicholas Sparks was on the CBS Early Show this past Friday to plug his new book The Best of Me, and he spilled the beans that his beloved novel The Notebook will be coming to the Broadway stage in the form of a musical!

The 1996 novel The Notebook is about young lovers Allie and Noah who meet and fall in love in the early 1940s, before family and war drag them apart from each other. They meet again many years later and, though Allie is engaged to someone else, they continue their love affair from where they left off. The story is being told by Noah many decades later in a nursing home to his wife Allie, who now suffers from Alzheimer's. The novel was, of course, adapted into a wildly successful 2004 film starring Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling.

And the story will live on, thanks to a new musical version, which is currently in the development process. When asked about the film and theatrical adaptation processes of his novels, Sparks responded, "It's [important] to work with people who you really trust, who understand what it's about, and who want to take that and mold it into something new. And so obviously The Notebook is going to be some sort of musical, and it's a lot of fun getting involved in that process, too." Later, when asked who he'd like to play the roles of Allie and Noah in the musical, he responded, "Gosh, I don't know. Someone who can sing!"

But sadly, it seems The Notebook: The Musical is still a ways away. Sparks admitted that he hasn't even thought about casting yet, because first he has to worry about the casting for Safe Haven, his next book to be adapted into a film, and then the casting for the film adaptation of his newest book, The Best of Me. Only after those projects are done will he be able to focus on The Notebook casting.

Though no creative team was mentioned, a little internet research revealed that a "work-in-progress" version of the musical was workshopped in Wilmington, NC in 2009. Additionally, it has been announced that Ron Aniello and Bethany Joy Galeotti are currently in the process of composing the score.
